A worry that keeps coming up lately is โ€œwhat if people think this is AI work and not our hard brainstorm-thought of work?ย  Design and marketing are ever evolving principles just like AI!

This article shows that this can happen – a photography competition organised by the Sydney print shop Charing Cross Photo, which took an unexpected turn due to concerns about AI-generated art.

In this age of tech advancements, AI-generated images have become a subject of both fascination and controversy. There have been instances where AI-generated artwork and photographs have won competitions, leaving judges unaware of their true origin. Understandably, competition organisers are now exercising caution to avoid such misunderstandings.

However, in their quest for vigilance, are we unintentionally hindering traditional artists and photographers? The recent incident involved Suzi Dougherty, who submitted a captivating photograph of her son posing with mannequins at a Gucci exhibition. Although taken on her iPhone and fitting the competition’s theme of “fashion,” the judges became sceptical and disqualified the photo, suspecting it to be AI art.

While I understand the organisers’ concerns given the AI art debate, it’s essential to strike a balance. In this case, the mannequins in the photo added an element of the uncanny valley, contributing to the doubt surrounding its authenticity. The judges, unable to verify the image’s metadata, erred on the side of caution and made the decision to disqualify it.

The print shop later admitted their mistake and apologised for the confusion caused.

It’s worth noting that AI remains a relatively new and evolving field, and accurately judging such images can be challenging. However, perhaps a more thorough investigation could have been conducted before disqualification. Talking with the photographer, Dougherty, would have shed light on the photo’s authenticity.

This incident raises important considerations for the design and marketing community. As professionals in these fields, we must embrace technological advancements while preserving the authenticity and creativity of traditional art forms.
